Meeto vs Jitsi as a Service (JaaS)

Meeto vs Jitsi as a Service (JaaS): embedded video calls

Choose JaaS for meetings of up to 500, white-label branding or HIPAA: it bills per monthly active user (25 free, $99 a month for 300), and each participant needs a JWT from your server. Choose Meeto for small calls with no server: its widget is free on every plan, up to 10 people (25 on Pro), badge always shown.

Should you choose Meeto or Jitsi as a Service (JaaS)?

Choose Meeto if

  • You want calls on your site without running a server or signing tokens.
  • Your visitor numbers are unpredictable: Meeto does not bill per user, while JaaS charges $0.99 for each one past your plan.
  • You want a WordPress plugin, or React, Vue and Angular packages ready to install.
  • A visible “Powered by Meeto” badge is acceptable.

Choose Jitsi as a Service (JaaS) if

  • Meetings can be larger than 25 people, up to 500.
  • You need white-label branding, HIPAA with a business associate agreement, or recording and transcription add-ons.
  • You want your own server to admit every participant with a signed token.

A JWT for every participant or a public key in the page?

With JaaS, 8x8 stores only your public key; you generate and sign a JWT with your private key for every participant. In practice that means a server endpoint that knows who the visitor is and returns a token before the call loads. In return, your server decides who may join each call.

Meeto takes the opposite approach. The key in your page (mk_live_…) is public by design and works only on the domains you register for it (mobile apps register app:// plus their bundle ID); the browser reports your page's origin, and Meeto checks it. You can revoke a key in the dashboard at any time.

The trade-off is control. Anyone who can open your page can start a call on your key: the visitor who opens an instant room becomes its host, and a named room is shared by everyone who opens it. If you need to decide who hosts, create rooms from your server with the secret key and pass the host secret only to your staff, as the developer documentation describes. For a step-by-step setup, see how to embed a video call.

What Meeto does not do

Meeto is built for small meetings that start from a link, a booking page or a website button. Paid plans hold up to 25 participants, and Meeto does not offer:

  • End-to-end encryption
  • Webinars or livestreaming
  • Breakout rooms
  • Polls
  • Phone dial-in
  • SSO / SAML single sign-on
  • Live captions over the call video

If any of these is a requirement, test it in Jitsi as a Service (JaaS) or another tool first. The full Meeto limits are on the pricing page and the security overview.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jitsi as a Service free?

JaaS includes 25 monthly active users free; the Basic plan costs $99 a month for 300, and each user beyond your plan costs $0.99. Meeto's widget costs nothing on any plan; the key owner's plan sets the size and length of each call.

What is the difference between JaaS and meet.jit.si?

meet.jit.si is the free public Jitsi Meet service. JaaS is 8x8's hosted Jitsi for developers who embed it in their own product, billed per monthly active user, with JWT authentication, white-label branding and add-ons such as recording.

Can I add Meeto to a site without a server?

Yes. Create a key in your Meeto dashboard, add your site's domains to it and paste the snippet; the public mk_live_… key only works on those domains. A server is optional, for creating rooms in advance or deciding who hosts.

Which one is better for large meetings?

JaaS: it allows up to 500 participants per meeting. Meeto widget calls hold up to 25 people on Pro.
