Noise suppression
AI noise suppression for browser video calls
Meeto removes background noise such as fans, traffic and typing from your microphone with an AI model that runs in your browser, before your voice reaches anyone else. It is on by default on computers with at least 4 processor cores, phones can turn it on with one switch, and it is free on every plan with nothing to install.
How does Meeto's noise suppression work?
Your microphone's sound passes through a noise suppression model inside the browser tab, and only the cleaned voice is sent into the call. Nothing extra is installed and no audio is sent anywhere else for processing.
- One filter, not two. While Meeto's model runs, the browser's own basic noise filter is switched off, so your voice is not processed twice. Echo cancellation and automatic volume stay on.
- Built for the device. Meeto chooses the model by what your browser and computer support, so the call stays smooth on less powerful machines.
- No silence on failure. If the model cannot start, Meeto falls back to your plain microphone instead of muting you.
Is noise suppression on by default?
On computers, yes; on phone and tablet browsers you turn it on yourself. Once you change the switch, your choice wins on that browser from then on.
| Device | Default |
|---|---|
| Computer with 4 or more processor cores | On |
| Computer with fewer than 4 cores | Off, to keep the call smooth; you can turn it on |
| Phone or tablet browser | Off; turn on Noise suppression (AI) in the call settings |
| iPhone and Android apps | The phone's built-in call processing, always on; no separate switch |
How do you turn it on or off?
- Open Settings & devices from the call toolbar during a meeting (Settings on a phone).
- Find Noise suppression (AI) in the devices section, next to your microphone.
- Switch it on or off. The change takes effect at once, without leaving the call, and is remembered in that browser.
The switch lives in the call, not on the screen before you join. If you cannot see it, your browser lacks the audio feature the model needs; joining from a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari usually solves it. For microphone permission problems, use the camera and microphone guide.
When should you switch noise suppression off?
When the sound you want to share is not speech. Models made for voices can treat other sounds as noise.
- Music lessons and instruments. Turn it off so held notes and quiet passages come through.
- Sound checks and audio demos. Switch it off while you play the sound, then back on.
- Echo from speakers. Noise suppression does not replace headphones. If others hear themselves, ask the person whose speakers are loud to use headphones.
Noise suppression cleans the sound of your room; to hide what the camera sees, add background blur. If the call itself breaks up, the cause is usually the network: see video calls on a slow connection.
Frequently asked questions
Is noise suppression free in Meeto?
Yes. It works on every plan, Free included, and for guests who join a link without an account.
Does Meeto send my audio to a server to remove the noise?
No. The noise is removed in your browser before your audio leaves the device. The cleaned audio then travels through Meeto's media servers like any call audio, encrypted in transit.
Does it work in the iPhone and Android apps?
The apps use the phone's own call audio processing: noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic volume are always on there. The separate AI switch exists only in the browser.
Can it remove the noise from someone else's microphone?
No. Each person's device cleans their own microphone. If one participant is noisy, ask them to turn on Noise suppression (AI) in their call settings, which is off by default in phone browsers.
