How Meeto works

Why Meeto guests never need an account

In Meeto only the host ever needs an account, and an instant meeting does not even need that. A guest opens the link, types a name and joins in the browser: no sign-up, no download, no email address. The host decides who gets in with an open, knock or password entry, and Meeto keeps only what it needs to run the call.

The principle: the host chooses Meeto, the guest just joins

A video call usually has one person who picked the tool and several people who did not. A client invited to a consultation, a candidate at an interview or a parent at a school meeting should not have to create an account, confirm an email address or install an app before they can say hello. Every extra step before the call is a chance for someone to arrive late or not at all.

So in Meeto the guest's path is a link and a name. That holds for every way into a call: a link you send by hand, an invitation to a scheduled meeting, a booking made on your booking page, or a call button on your website through the video call widget. Joining a call is free for guests, on every plan.

How does a guest join a Meeto call?

A guest opens the meeting link in a current browser on a computer or a phone and lands in the lobby:

  1. The lobby says whose meeting it is and shows a preview labelled “This is how others see you”.
  2. The guest types a display name and allows the camera and microphone, or keeps either switched off — joining with the camera off is fine.
  3. If something does not work, Test your connection checks the network before anyone is waiting.
  4. Join meeting takes them into the call, or to the knock or password step if the host set one.

The browser remembers the name and the chosen camera and microphone for next time; they stay on that device. The interface appears in the guest's own language, picked from the browser — Meeto speaks 42 of them. Guests who already have the Meeto app on iPhone or Android can use it, but nobody has to. The video calls without a download page has the checklist to send a first-time guest, and the camera and microphone guide covers the usual device problems.

How does the host control who gets in?

Without accounts, the meeting link is the key, so the host decides how much that key opens. Every room has one of three entry modes, which the host can change from the lobby or during the call:

Meeto entry modes
Entry modeWhat the guest experiences
OpenAnyone with the link joins instantly.
KnockThe guest knocks and waits; the host sees the name, lets them in or declines, and the guest joins automatically once let in.
PasswordThe guest enters the password once and joins without waiting for approval.

During the call the host has the controls a guest-friendly room needs:

  • Lock entry so no one else joins; a newcomer can still knock and be let in by the host.
  • Mute one person or everyone, and hand host rights to someone else.
  • Remove from call: a removed person cannot rejoin that meeting unless the host chooses Let back in. After a removal, new guests knock until the meeting ends — the host can switch that off.

Display names are whatever a guest types, so treat them as a label, not proof of identity. For a meeting where that matters, use knock and compare the name with the person you invited, or use a password and share it through a separate channel.

What does Meeto keep about a guest?

Very little, because there is no account to attach anything to. For a guest, Meeto stores the display name they typed, the meeting they joined and when they joined and left, plus the technical connection data any web service needs to run a call and prevent abuse, such as the IP address and browser. It does not ask a guest for an email address to join.

  • An email address enters the picture only when the guest gives one — booking a time on a booking page — or when the host invites them by email to a scheduled meeting.
  • Chat messages sent during the call are deleted when the meeting ends.
  • Audio and video are encrypted in transit and pass through Meeto's media servers. Meeto is not end-to-end encrypted, and says so plainly.
  • Recording and AI summary start only when a host on a paid plan turns them on. Everyone in the call is shown a notice and an indicator, and meeting content is not used to train AI models.

The privacy policy lists everything in detail, and the video meeting privacy guide helps a host plan consent, recordings and shared links.

What this means for the host

The host is the one who signs in, because the host is the one who needs history, settings and a plan. A host account gives you a personal address that doubles as a booking page, scheduled and recurring meetings, connected calendars, recordings and summaries on Pro or Team, and the website widget. An instant meeting from the home page needs no account at all, which is the quickest way to try Meeto with someone.

Plan limits follow the host, never the guest. On Free a call has up to 10 participants and stops after 60 minutes once two or more people are in it; Pro and Team allow up to 25 participants with no time limit for up to two simultaneous meetings per account. A guest never upgrades anything — see pricing for the full table.

Frequently asked questions

Can a guest join from a phone without the app?

Yes. The meeting link opens in a current mobile browser on iPhone or Android. The Meeto app is optional for guests.

Does a guest need an account to book a time with me?

No. A guest books on your booking page with a name and an email address, so you can send the meeting details. They join the call from the link without creating an account.

Can a guest see the AI summary or recording afterwards?

Only if the host shares it. Summaries and recordings belong to the host, who can share them by a link and switch that link off later. A guest does not need a paid plan to open what was shared with them.

Can someone forward my meeting link to other people?

With an open room, anyone who has the link can join. Use knock to approve each person, a password shared separately, or lock entry once everyone is in.
