Waiting room

A waiting room for video meetings: knock, password or open

In Meeto the host decides how people get into each meeting. The room can be open to anyone with the link, ask each guest to knock and wait until the host lets them in, or ask for a password. During the call the host can mute people and remove them, and a removed person cannot rejoin that meeting unless the host lets them back in.

Which entry modes does a Meeto room have?

Three, under Who can join. Each room has one mode at a time, and the host can change it during the call.

Entry modes in Meeto
ModeWhat happens
OpenAnyone with the link joins instantly
KnockEach guest waits until the host lets them in or declines
PasswordGuests enter the password once, with no approval needed; up to 128 characters

A new instant meeting starts open, so you can share the link and talk straight away. Scheduled meetings, bookings from your booking page and direct calls start with a password that is already inside the link you send, so invited people join without typing it while the bare room address stays closed.

How does knocking work for the guest and the host?

The guest waits on their own screen before the meeting, and the host answers from inside the call. There is no shared lobby where waiting guests see each other.

The guest

Checks the camera, types a name and presses Knock to enter. The button changes to "Knocking — waiting for" the host's name, and the guest joins automatically when let in, or can stop knocking.

The host

Sees "Anna wants to join" with Let in and Decline, and a Waiting list in the Participants panel. Up to 20 people can wait at once.

A declined guest

Sees "The host declined your knock" and stays outside. The host can still change the mode to Open or Password at any time.

How do you change who can join?

Choose the mode before you go in or during the call; the change applies straight away.

  1. Before joining. On your screen before the meeting, press Change next to the entry mode and pick Open, Knock or Password.
  2. During the call. Open Participants and choose a mode under Who can join. To use a password, type it and press Set; you can copy it or remove it later.
  3. From your own software. Pro and Team accounts can set the mode through the REST API; see the developer documentation.

What can the host do during the call?

  • Mute one person. Mute next to their name turns their microphone off and tells them "Host muted you". They can unmute themselves when they need to speak.
  • Mute all. Mutes everyone else in one step. A screen share's sound keeps playing.
  • Remove from call. Takes a person out of the meeting after a confirmation. Hosts cannot mute or remove other hosts.

Host controls work the same in the browser and in the iPhone and Android apps. Meeto has no webinar mode and no hard mute that stops people from speaking, so it suits meetings, lessons and consultations rather than broadcasts to a large silent audience.

Can a removed person rejoin the meeting?

No, not on their own. A removed person cannot come back into that meeting until the host lets them back in.

  • What they see. "The host removed you from the meeting", without a Rejoin button. Opening the link again shows "Only the host can let you back in."
  • How Meeto recognizes them. By their account, or by the browser or app they joined from.
  • Newcomers knock. After a removal, an open or password room asks new guests to knock until the meeting ends, so the person cannot slip back in from another browser. People already admitted return without knocking, and the host can switch this off.
  • Changing your mind. The Participants panel lists removed people with Let back in.

The block lasts for that meeting; the next meeting in the same room starts with a clean list. For how Meeto handles call data, see privacy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the waiting room free in Meeto?

Yes. Open, knock and password entry, muting and removing people work on every plan, Free included. The plan sets the size of the meeting: up to 10 people on Free and 25 on Pro and Team.

Can I let everyone in at once?

No. The host lets each person in or declines them one by one. For a meeting where everyone should walk straight in, switch the room to Open, or use Password and share it with the people you expect.

Does a guest need an account to knock?

No. A guest opens the link in a browser, types a name and knocks. The host sees that name before letting them in.

Do invited guests have to type a password for a scheduled meeting?

No. Scheduled meetings and bookings are password-protected, but the password is built into the link in the invitation, so the people you invited join directly. Someone who only has the room address without it needs the password.

What if a removed person opens the link in another browser?

Meeto recognizes them by their account, or by the browser or app they used. In a new browser without an account they are not recognized, but after a removal every newcomer has to knock, so you decide again.
