Camera test

Test your camera online

Press Start camera test to see your webcam on this page and read the resolution and frame rate your browser actually receives from it. The preview never leaves your device: nothing is recorded or uploaded. If the camera does not start, the test says why and which setting to change in your browser or operating system.

Check your camera

Your camera preview appears here. Nothing is recorded or sent.

Runs entirely in your browser. The camera starts only when you press the button, the picture is never recorded or uploaded, and the camera is released when you stop the test or leave the page.

What do the camera test numbers mean?

The test reports what the browser really gets from the camera, not what the box says. The two can differ: browsers pick a size that the camera, its connection and the computer can sustain.

Camera test readings
ReadingWhat it tells you
Resolution deliveredThe width and height of the frames arriving in the preview, measured from the video itself. It changes when you ask for another quality or pick another camera.
Frame rate measuredFrames shown in the preview during the last second, counted by the browser. Dim light often lowers it, because cameras keep each frame exposed longer.
Frame rate reportedThe rate the browser says it set the camera to. When the measured rate is much lower, the camera cannot keep up in the current light or at this size.
Camera maximumThe largest size and frame rate the camera offers this browser. Firefox and Safari do not always report it.

For a video call, a steady picture matters more than the biggest size. Video meetings send far less than your camera can capture and adjust it to the connection: Meeto steps quality down on a weak network and back up when it recovers. Use the connection test to check the network side.

How to test a webcam step by step

  1. Start the test. Press Start camera test. The browser asks for camera access only after you press the button; choose Allow.
  2. Check the picture. Look at the preview: you should see yourself, in focus and lit from the front. The preview is mirrored like a bathroom mirror; the people in a call see you the right way round.
  3. Read the numbers. Compare the resolution delivered with the quality you asked for, and the measured frame rate with the reported one. Ask for Full HD or 4K to see the most your camera gives this browser.
  4. Try another camera. If you have more than one camera, pick another in the Camera list. On a phone the list shows the front and back cameras.
  5. Stop the camera. Press Stop camera or leave the page. The browser releases the camera at once and its light goes off.

Camera not working? Fixes for every browser

When access is blocked, the browser will not ask again on its own: you have to allow the camera for the site, then reload. Find your browser below.

Chrome on a computer

  1. Click the site controls icon at the left end of the address bar.
  2. Switch camera on, or set it to Allow under Site settings.
  3. Reload the page and start the test again.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar and open Permissions for this site.
  2. Set camera to Allow.
  3. Reload the page and start the test again.

Firefox

  1. Click the crossed-out camera or permissions icon in the address bar.
  2. Clear the Blocked setting next to the device.
  3. Reload the page and allow access when Firefox asks again.

Safari on a Mac

  1. Open the Safari menu and choose Settings for this website.
  2. Set Camera to Allow or Ask.
  3. Reload the page and start the test again.

iPhone and iPad

  1. In Safari, tap the page menu in the address bar, open Website Settings and set Camera to Allow.
  2. In Chrome or another browser, open the Settings app, find that browser and switch Camera on.
  3. Return to the page, reload it and start the test again.

Android

  1. Tap the icon at the left end of the address bar and open Permissions.
  2. Set Camera to Allow. If the browser itself has no access, open Android Settings, then Apps, your browser and Permissions, and allow Camera.
  3. Reload the page and start the test again.

If every browser on the computer fails, the operating system is blocking the camera. macOS: Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera, and switch your browser on. Quit and reopen the browser afterwards. Windows 11: Open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera. Turn on Camera access and "Let desktop apps access your camera".

The camera is busy

Another app or tab is using it. Quit other meeting, recording and camera apps (on Windows a camera usually works with one app at a time), then press Try again.

No camera found

Check the cable or Bluetooth connection, a privacy shutter on the lens and a camera key on the keyboard. External webcams sometimes need a different USB port.

A black picture

A shutter, a covered lens or a camera app holding the device can give a black frame while the test runs. Open the camera list and pick the other camera to compare.

Get your camera ready for a video call

  • Light from the front. A window or lamp behind you turns your face into a silhouette; face the light instead.
  • Camera at eye level. Raise a laptop on a stand or a few books so the lens looks straight at you.
  • Close what you do not need. Other video apps can hold the camera and slow the computer down.
  • Check the sound too. Run the microphone test and the speaker test before an important call.

In Meeto you choose the camera and microphone in the lobby before you join, and guests join from a link in their browser with no account or download. If something still fails inside a call, follow the camera and microphone troubleshooting guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is this camera test private?

Yes. The video goes from your camera to this browser tab and nowhere else: nothing is recorded, saved or sent to a server. The camera turns off when you press Stop camera, reload, close the tab or go to another page.

Why does my camera show 720p when it is a 1080p webcam?

The test asks for HD 720p first, which is what most video calls use. Choose Full HD 1080p or 4K in the quality list to ask for more. If the delivered size still does not rise, the camera, its USB connection or the browser is limiting it.

Why is my picture mirrored?

A front camera preview is mirrored so that moving left moves your image left, as in a mirror. Other people in a call see the unmirrored picture, so text you hold up reads correctly for them. Untick Mirror preview to see what they see.

Does the camera test work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari and Chrome on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome and other current browsers on Android. The camera list shows the front and back cameras; the back camera is not mirrored.

How do I stop the browser from remembering camera access?

Open the site settings from the icon next to the address and reset or block the camera permission for meeto.me. The next time a page on this site needs the camera, the browser asks again.
