Speaker test
Test your speakers and headphones
Press Play test sound to hear a short two-note chime. Play it on the left or right side only to check that stereo headphones are the right way round. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a computer you can choose which speaker plays it; Safari, iPhone and Android browsers use the output the system has selected. The sound is made on this page; nothing is uploaded.
Play a test sound
This browser does not let websites choose a speaker. Safari plays website sound through the output the system is using. To test another speaker or headset, switch it in Control Center, then Sound (or System Settings, Sound), then play the sound again.
Runs entirely in your browser. The chime is generated on this page; nothing is recorded or uploaded. The microphone is used only if you ask to list speakers in Chrome or Edge, and is closed again immediately.
Which browsers let a website choose the speaker?
Choosing the output from a web page depends on the browser. Where it is not possible, the sound plays on the output the operating system uses, and you switch it there.
| Browser | Can this page pick the speaker? |
|---|---|
| Chrome and Edge on a computer | Yes, after microphone access is allowed (that is when the browser reveals speaker names). |
| Firefox on a computer | Yes, through Firefox's own speaker chooser; no microphone access needed. |
| Safari on a Mac | No. Sound follows the output selected in Control Center or System Settings, Sound. |
| Any browser on iPhone or iPad | No. Sound follows the output chosen in Control Center (speaker, AirPods, Bluetooth). |
| Browsers on Android | Usually not. Sound follows the system output; switch Bluetooth devices from Android's settings or the quick settings panel. |
How to test speakers and headphones
- Set a moderate volume. Turn the system volume to about half before the first play, especially with headphones on.
- Play the test sound. Press Play test sound. You should hear two soft rising notes, under a second long.
- Check left and right. Press Left only and Right only. Each should come from one side; if they are swapped, the headphones are on the wrong way round or the channels are swapped in the sound settings.
- Choose another output. In Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer, list your speakers and pick a headset or external speaker, then play the sound again. In Safari or on an iPhone, switch the output in the system instead.
No sound from your speakers?
Volume and mute
Check the system volume, the mute key, the volume wheel on a headset and the per-site sound setting: browsers can mute one tab or site.
The wrong output
A monitor, dock or Bluetooth device can take the sound when it connects. Pick the output you are listening to in the system sound settings or in the list above.
Bluetooth in call mode
Many Bluetooth headsets switch to a lower-quality mono mode while their microphone is in use. It is normal for calls; close the call to hear stereo again.
Once speakers, microphone and camera all work, check the network with the connection test. In a Meeto meeting the lobby has its own Test sound button under Device settings, so you can check the sound again just before you join.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I choose a speaker in Safari or on my iPhone?
Safari and every browser on iPhone and iPad (they all use Apple's WebKit engine) do not let websites pick an audio output. Website sound goes to the output the system uses, so switch it in Control Center or the Mac's Sound settings and play the sound again.
Why does listing my speakers ask for the microphone?
Chrome and Edge show speaker names only to a site that has microphone access. The test opens the microphone for a moment to unlock the list and closes it at once; nothing is recorded. Firefox shows its own speaker chooser instead.
I hear the left sound in both ears. Is something broken?
Usually not. A mono audio setting (an accessibility option on phones and computers), a single-speaker device such as a phone speaker or a Bluetooth headset in call mode all play one channel to both sides.
The speaker test plays, but I cannot hear people in calls. Why?
A meeting can play through a different output than this page if you picked one in its settings. In Meeto the call follows the system output unless you choose a speaker in the lobby or call settings, and that choice lasts for the current tab only.
