Microsoft Teams free limits
Microsoft Teams free limits: meeting length, people, storage and recording
Microsoft Teams free allows group meetings of up to 60 minutes with up to 100 participants, 5 GB of file storage and no meeting recordings. Microsoft's pages disagree on one-on-one calls: up to 30 hours on one, 60 minutes in its plan table. Paid plans run meetings up to 30 hours; Teams Essentials costs $4 per user a month, paid yearly.
What are the limits of Microsoft Teams free?
Microsoft's free plan for personal use covers meetings, chat and file sharing, with these limits:
- Group meetings: up to 60 minutes[1].
- Participants: up to 100 per meeting[2].
- File storage: 5 GB[3].
- Recording: not included[4].
- AI recaps: need a Teams Premium or Microsoft 365 Copilot license[5].
Guests do not need a Teams account: they can join from the meeting link[6], from a web browser without installing anything[7].
How long can a one-on-one call last on Teams free?
Microsoft does not give one answer. Its free video conferencing page offers unlimited one-to-one meetings for up to 30 hours[8], while its comparison of Teams subscriptions lists a maximum meeting duration of 60 minutes for Teams for personal use, with a single row for all meetings[9].
We do not pick one. If long calls between two people matter to you, run a test call past the hour before you depend on it, or use a tool whose one-on-one limit is stated clearly, such as Google Meet's 24 hours on a computer[10].
What do you get by paying for Teams?
Microsoft 365 Personal and Family and the Teams business plans raise the meeting length to 30 hours[11]; Personal and Family also allow 300 participants[12]. For a small business, Microsoft Teams Essentials offers group meetings of up to 30 hours with up to 300 people[13] for $4 per user a month, paid yearly[14], and includes meeting recordings[4].
If you mainly need longer or recorded meetings, not chat and files, a meetings tool may cost less. Meeto, which publishes this guide, allows 60 minutes free once 2 or more people are in the call, for up to 10 people. Pro costs $6.99 a month, month to month, with no time limit for up to 2 meetings at a time, up to 25 people, and cloud recording kept 90 days with a transcript and AI summary. It is not a workplace chat, has no end-to-end encryption, and connects Google and Apple calendars, not Outlook. See how Meeto recording works.

Frequently asked questions
How long can a meeting be on Microsoft Teams free?
Group meetings can last up to 60 minutes. For one-on-one meetings Microsoft's pages disagree: one says up to 30 hours, while its plan comparison gives 60 minutes for every meeting on the free plan. Test a long one-on-one call before you rely on it.
How many people can join a free Teams meeting?
Up to 100 participants. People without a Teams account can join from the meeting link, in a web browser.
Can I record meetings on Teams free?
No. Microsoft lists meeting recordings as not included in Teams for personal use; they come with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, Teams Essentials and business plans.
What does Teams Essentials add?
Teams Essentials allows group meetings of up to 30 hours with up to 300 people and includes meeting recordings. It costs $4 per user a month on a yearly subscription.
I used Skype. Is Teams free the replacement?
Yes. Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025 and points Skype users to Teams Free, where they sign in with their Skype account and their chats and contacts move over.
