Call without an app

How to video call someone without an app

Open meeto.me, select Start a new meeting, copy the link and send it to the person by text, chat or email. They tap it, type a name and join from their browser, on a phone or a computer. Neither of you installs an app or creates an account. People who both have Meeto accounts can also ring each other directly.

How do I start a video call in the browser?

A browser can make a video call on its own; Meeto supplies the room and the link. The whole process takes one click and one message.

  1. Start a meeting. On meeto.me select Start a new meeting; no account is needed. The lobby opens in the same tab with the title Your meeting is ready and the line “Share the link — guests join in seconds, no sign-up”.
  2. Copy the link. Select Copy link. It looks like meeto.me/misty-fox-42. The link is the whole invitation; there is no code or app to explain.
  3. Send it. Paste it into the conversation you already have with the person: a text message, WhatsApp, Telegram or another messenger, or an email.
  4. Go in. Select Start the meeting. Allow the camera and microphone when the browser asks.
  5. Talk. The other person opens the link, enters a name and selects Join meeting, and you see and hear each other. Send them the guest joining guide if they have never used a browser call.

An instant link made on the Free plan stops working once its free hour is over, so start a new meeting for the next call. A scheduled meeting from your dashboard keeps its link; see how to create a video meeting link for the difference.

Should I send a link or call directly?

Send a link when the other person has no Meeto account or when you call them once. Ring them directly when you both have accounts and call each other often.

Two ways to video call someone with Meeto
WayWhat it needs and how it feels
Send a linkNothing on their side. You create the room, they open the link whenever they are ready. Works with anyone.
Direct call to a contactBoth of you have Meeto accounts and have accepted each other as contacts. Their screen rings with your name, like a phone call.

How do I ring a contact like a phone call?

Add the person once, then call them with one button. Both of you need a Meeto account.

  1. Add the contact. In the dashboard open Contacts. Under Add a contact type their meeto.me/name address or email and select Find, then Add contact. They accept under Incoming requests. Or send them your invite with Invite via link or QR.
  2. Call. Next to their name select Voice call or Video call. Your screen shows Calling… while theirs rings for up to 40 seconds.
  3. They answer. In the browser they see your name, Incoming call, and Accept or Decline. Accepting opens the call lobby; a voice call starts with the camera off.

In a browser

The call rings in an open Meeto dashboard tab. To receive calls with the tab closed, select Enable for browser notifications in the dashboard.

On iPhone in Safari

Add Meeto to the Home Screen first (Share → Add to Home Screen), then enable notifications from the installed page. The iPhone app shows a native incoming-call screen instead.

Who can call whom

Only accepted contacts can call each other, so nobody else can ring you. A direct call follows the caller's plan, so the free 60-minute limit applies to free callers.

How do I call someone who has never made a video call?

Tell them what to expect before you send the link. A short message works better than instructions sent after something goes wrong.

  • Say what they will see. A page with their camera picture, a Your name field and a Join meeting button. Nothing to download.
  • Mention the permission question. The browser asks whether the page may use the camera and microphone; they should choose Allow.
  • Agree on a fallback. If they cannot hear you, they should check the phone's volume and that the microphone button is not muted, then open the link again.
  • Stay on the phone line if needed. For a parent or grandparent, an ordinary phone call while they open the link removes most of the stress.

If a camera or microphone refuses to start, the camera and microphone guide covers blocked permissions and devices busy in other apps.

Does it work on a phone browser?

Yes. A current mobile browser can join with camera and microphone, chat, react and draw on someone else's shared screen. Sharing your own phone screen needs the app, and on iPhone background blur is most dependable in the app. See how to share your screen from a phone.

On a weak mobile connection the call lowers video quality on its own and keeps the audio going. If the picture keeps freezing, follow how to fix a laggy video call.

Frequently asked questions

Does the other person need to install anything?

No. They open your link in the browser they already use, on a computer or a phone, type a name and join. Meeto also has iOS and Android apps, but nobody has to install them for a call.

Is it free to video call someone this way?

Yes. A meeting started from the home page is free for both sides. On the Free plan a call can include up to 10 people and stops after 60 minutes once two or more people are in it, with warnings at 5 and 1 minute before the end. Pro removes the time limit.

Can I call someone's phone number?

No. Meeto calls are internet video calls in the browser or the app. There is no phone dial-in and no calling of ordinary phone numbers. Send the link by text message instead.

Is a one-to-one call private?

Only the people who open the link can join, and you can make the host approve each guest. Every Meeto call, one-to-one included, runs through Meeto's media servers and is encrypted in transit; it is not end-to-end encrypted. See the security page for details.
