Otter.ai alternatives

Otter.ai alternatives for AI meeting notes

Otter's free Basic plan transcribes 300 minutes a month, up to 30 minutes per conversation, and Pro costs $16.99 per user a month. Fireflies, tl;dv and Fathom offer unlimited free transcription with limited AI; Read AI covers 5 meetings a month. Meeto and Zoom build summaries into their own calls instead of sending a bot. Six options compared, with sources.

What Otter's free plan includes

Otter's free Basic plan includes 300 transcription minutes a month, at most 30 minutes per conversation, and keeps your 25 most recent conversations[1]. Otter Notetaker joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet calls as a participant, and a desktop app records without a bot[2]. It transcribes six languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese[3]. Pro costs $16.99 per user a month billed monthly[4].

Most alternatives work the same way, with a bot or a desktop app. A different approach is a meeting tool with AI built in, so there is nothing to invite. Meeto works like that for calls held in Meeto; see how its AI summary works.

Meeto

by Meeto — the publisher of this page

A video meeting tool with AI notes built in: no bot, because the call itself happens in Meeto.

How it works
Built into Meeto calls: the host starts it, everyone is shown a notice and an indicator; it does not join Zoom, Meet or Teams
Free plan
No AI notes on Free. Pro and Team: AI summary for 10 hours of meetings a month, then a full transcript and a basic summary
Languages
Detected per speaker, so a multilingual meeting works; the summary is written in the meeting's main language
Video recording

Training on your data
Meeting content is not used to train AI models
Cheapest paid plan
Pro: $6.99/month or $69/year, including the meetings

  • Summaries with key points, decisions and action items, exported to Markdown, plain text or PDF.
  • Meetings in more than one language.

Watch out for

  • It does not take notes in Zoom, Google Meet or Teams calls; the meeting has to be in Meeto.

Watch out for

  • Covers Zoom meetings only.
  • Turning on end-to-end encryption turns off AI features.[41]

Facts from Zoom's own pages, listed under Sources. Full comparison: Meeto vs Zoom.

A notetaker bot or AI built into the meeting?

A notetaker joins meetings wherever they happen, which is what you need if other people host on Zoom, Meet or Teams. A meeting tool with built-in AI only covers its own calls, but nothing joins as an extra participant and the notes sit next to the recording.

  • Your meetings are on someone else's platform: use a notetaker from the list above, or the platform's own AI.
  • You host the calls yourself: a meeting tool with built-in notes saves a step. In Meeto, starting a recording also starts the AI summary; see how to record a meeting.
  • Either way: tell people the meeting is being transcribed. Meeto shows everyone a notice and an indicator; asking for consent where the law requires it is up to you.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Otter alternative without a bot in the meeting?

Yes, two kinds. Several notetakers offer a desktop app that records without a bot: Otter, Fireflies, tl;dv (audio only), Read AI, and Fathom in a Mac beta. Or the AI can be part of the meeting tool itself, as with Zoom's AI summaries in Zoom calls and Meeto's in Meeto calls.

Which Otter alternative has the most generous free plan?

By the vendors' own wording, Fathom offers unlimited recordings and transcription on Free with some AI features limited, Fireflies unlimited transcription with 400 minutes of storage and limited summaries, and tl;dv unlimited recordings with AI notes on your first 10 meetings. Otter Basic gives 300 minutes a month, up to 30 minutes per conversation.

Can Meeto take notes in my Zoom or Google Meet calls?

No. Meeto's AI summary works only in meetings held in Meeto. If your meetings happen on Zoom, Meet or Teams, a notetaker such as the ones above, or the platform's own AI features, is the right tool.

Do these tools train AI on my meetings?

It differs. Fireflies and tl;dv say they never use your data for training; Read AI keeps it off unless you opt in; Fathom and Otter use de-identified data to improve their own models. Meeto does not use meeting content to train AI models. Each statement is linked to the vendor's page above.
